It was a bright, beautiful, and hot summer day as we set off for Bamberg in our vintage convertible.
The sky was cloudless, the air was warm, and the anticipation of our little fabric adventure was palpable in the air.
Our goal?
A small but extremely renowned hat workshop called Bullani , run by Eva and her father.
The two were known throughout Germany for their masterful headwear.
Together they formed the perfect duo when it came to conjuring up true sewing works of art for the head from high-quality fabric.

Steffi on the highway behind the wheel of her convertible on the way to Bamberg

I love driving a convertible and wouldn't want to miss it every summer! However, there's one small but persistent problem: my headscarf.
The wind, which I love so much, made it an unpredictable accessory. It constantly slipped, and my hair fell into my face.
How many times had I had to let go of the steering wheel to adjust it? Far too many times. We desperately needed a better solution.
The idea came to us one evening while we were talking about short convertible tours in Franconia over a glass of wine.
“Why don’t we get some Bullani hats made?” my friend suddenly suggested, complaining about the relentless sun on his head during hot day trips.
"Convertible hats made from our summer tweed, which Zuleeg made himself. That would be perfect."
I looked at him, and we both knew immediately: This was exactly the solution we were looking for.
And so we found ourselves on the way to Bamberg, with our favorite cotton fabric – our summer tweed, a high-quality fabric available by the meter, which you can also order in our online fabric shop – in the back seat. The Bullanis were known not only for creating hats with style and character, but also for having a special flair for tailoring their sewn pieces precisely to the personality of their customers.
When we arrived at their cozy sewing workshop, we were warmly welcomed by Eva and her mother. They greeted us with a warm smile and a careful look at the panama fabric. "Convertible hats, then," Eva said thoughtfully, stroking the summery fabric. "That's doable. Something that fits perfectly – even in wind and weather."
We spent some time discussing the details—the shape, the color, and the little details that would make our handmade hats unique. Eva measured our heads precisely, made some sketches, and showed us similar patterns for similar headwear. The workshop is a true paradise for anyone who appreciates high-quality fabrics and craftsmanship. Woolen fabrics, boiled wool, tweeds, cottons, and other fine natural materials are scattered everywhere, transformed into hats and caps in every imaginable shape and color.
A week later, the moment finally arrived: We were allowed to pick up our custom-made hats. When we put them on, they fit like a glove. It felt like they were a part of us, made specifically for our heads. On the drive home in our vintage convertible, the hats sat firmly and securely, nothing slipped, and for the first time in a long time, I was able to fully enjoy the breeze – without having to worry about my headscarf slipping.
These sustainable hats, 100% made in Germany, are more than just practical accessories. They are an expression of our personality and unique style, a piece of freedom—and a wonderful reminder that the best solutions often arise from the most beautiful collaborations. A perfect symbiosis of high-quality fabric production and masterful craftsmanship!
Thank you, Bullanis , for being there and for perfectly showcasing our fabrics ! ♥
